Life Changing Authors Meet and Free Book Giveaway

The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim FerrisThe Power of Less by Leo Babauta

1/19/09 The winners have been announced.

This month, two authors that have had the greatest influence on my life met together and discussed their basic philosophies. It is a pleasure and a treat for me to be able to witness them interact with each other as I have learned so much from both of them. Earlier in January, Tim Ferris author of The Four Hour Work Week blog interviewed Leo, and then just yesterday, Leo interviewed Tim Ferris and posted the audio on his blog Zen Habits. Again, this was a treat for me, and I was excited to see them recognize each other for their great contributions. Leo for showing us how wonderful it is to live our lives simply, and Tim for how much we can accomplish if we focus and streamline.

The Money Book by Suze OrmanToday, I am offering their books, The Power of Less (Hardcover) by Leo Babauta and The 4 Hour Work Week (Hardcover) by Tim Ferris. Also another author that has inspired me to do more with my money is Suze Orman. I will be giving away her book too, The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke. These books will absolutely change your life.

The catch, is that you need to leave a comment on this post explaining your inspiration for change and which book you are interested in. Read the descriptions and visit their blogs for more information on what they’re about. My assumption is that you want to be a better person if you’re interested in these books, but why? Just because? Are you doing it for your partner, your kids? Have you had a rough past, or maybe you are still having it rough?

I will choose the winners just before midnight on Martin Luther King Jr Day (January 19th). Make sure you leave a valid e-mail address (it is not displayed publically)!

  1. I have a son who has a chronic sleep disorder. I’ve always told him that he has to make the most of the small window of opportunity he has each day to be productive. But I find it difficult in helping him figure out what’s most important. Certainly school is his main focus, but what comes after that? I think there’s also ways I can be more efficient in my day so that I could be there for him more. And so I’d like to read this book and also share it with my son. From the reviews I’ve read about it, I think there’s a lot we can learn.

  2. Growing up as a boy who didn’t have a father who truly loved him. Yes, my father would buy me things. But he would never care about who I was, what I did, what I was learning in school or anything else. So in an attempt to bond with him, I would go shopping and buy things by the thousand dollar mark regularly. Falsely believing that him ignoring me for ever but buying me things was true love father and son love, I continued my hedonistic lifestyle. After reading first Cal Newport’s Blog, and then Leo’s ZenHabits blog, I’ve greatly changed my view.

Now, you may wonder that since I’m so affluent, why I would want The Power of Less by Leo Babauta. The reason is that my father gambled away all of his money in the stock market. He loses millions of dollars and says nothing of it and takes out his anger on me for turning on the air conditioning or buying food from school. He goes to get his haircut but loses several thousands of dollars daily.

I don’t know what to tell him. He never listens to me. He would simply yell at me. He always seems to overkill whether this be spending or saving and now he won’t let me buy anything whatsoever - and certainly not a book as “that is not a necessity.”

Being Leo’s number one fan, I find it disappointing that I cannot further expanding my horizons through his wonderful ideologies.

    :)

  3. I found Leo’s Web site and, after a visit, I realized I could probably learn a lot from his book. I tend to feel very unorganized and have trouble prioritizing - well not all the time, but more than I’d like. There’s so much to do every day and the things that are most important, like taking care of oneself and exercising, often get pushed aside in trying to do it all. Often I procrastinate so much about doing the stuff I don’t want to do and how I should be doing other stuff that I don’t get things done - balancing checkbook, cleaning house, working out… I’m trying to figure out how to plan my life better. How to use my energy in a positive way and how to not let the basic chores of everyday life get me down. I think it’s about using our energy in a positive, meaningful way. I’m on the right track. Leo’s book just might help!
    Cheers.

  4. I’ve heard about this The 4 Hour Work Week (Hardcover) and I think it’s a good source of tips about doing what really matters in life/work. But I don’t have international Credit Card, I don’t have Paypal account to buy it on Ebay. And this book is not available in Portuguese, so my only hope is you. :) I’m trying to open my own business later this year. I’m a freelancer webdeveloper living in Sao Paulo. By the way, I’ll give 3 books here also. Good idea to inspire people to connect with people. Um abraco!

  6. I want Suze Orman’s book, because, I’m proud to say, none of my four children live above their means, yet have many friends who fit the demographic description of those Suze is talking about in this book, and I’d find it hugely interesting to read how (possibly) parenting came into play in creating such financially irresponsible offspring.

  7. I would like the The 4 Hour Work Week (Hardcover) by Tim Ferris because I am finding myself spending more time at work and less taking care of myself and my family. I need to establish some balance so I can still enjoy my work (which I really like) and spend time with my husband (which I really love after 18 1/2 years).

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  8. The book that I need to move my life forward this year is The Power of Less. The last 7 years of my life have been incredibly complicated — 5 years of ongoing court battles in a divorce that financially devastated me, starting a new career from ground zero, health problems from all the stress, fixing up a run down home with little to no money or assistance. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. But last year was the beginning of the turnaround for me, and my life is beginning to feel like something more than a soap opera. I read about Leo’s book on Amazon as well as his website and realize that simplifying my life as he describes will take me to next level. Thanks for your consideration

p.s. I was also glad to discover your website - lots of good help here as well.

  9. Wow! What a fantastic offer–thank you! I would love to receive a copy of Leo’s book (I found the link to your site from his!) Back in December I decided that 2009 was going to be my year to “Do Less, Be More.” First, I want to simplify and really focus on the things that matter the most to me (I am working on narrowing those down to 4-5 things) and second I want to practice being fully present in my life as much as possible. I have no doubt that Leo’s book can help me get there. I’ve been a follower of his for quite a while now and have gotten a lot from his blog so I am excited to read the book. I already have Tim’s book (it’s terrific!) and I’ve got a couple of Suze’s as well.

I had a great experience at the end of December that helped me see I was on the right track. My husband I spent a week in Cozumel. All we did was scuba dive, sleep, eat and relax. I gave myself permission to just “be” and let everything else slip away (granted, easier done when on vacation and away from the daily grind!) But it gave me insight into what simplifying and just “being” can do for the soul. I have a whole new perspective as a result of that trip.

I’ve also been working on taking small steps to create new habits that support what I want in my life (for example, one habit toward creating better health is to eat vegetables every day.) Leo is an advocate of focusing on creating new habits and taking small steps. I love this philosophy.

So, I think I’m on the right path and I’d love to receive the gift of Leo’s book to offer more insight and encouragement.

Thank you, Jacques. And Happy New Year!

  10. I’d like to read The Money Book, not because I’m young, fabulous and broke, but because I’m the exact opposite! Well, perhaps I’m young and fabulous, but definitely not broke ;). This ties into my resolution of trying to be more helpful… doing more good and placing more effort into helping other people. This book would help me because my peers tend to come to me for advice but I don’t really know what to tell them, especially in regards to having a difficult financial situation. I’m debt free and a modest spender, so it’s hard for me to understand rampant credit card debt from common place out of control spending. I’d like to read this book so I can offer my friends better advice and be a little more sympathetic!

  12. While all of these books are something I could benefit from, I would like to receive The Power of Less so that I can learn from it, and teach the students at my school lessons from the book. (I am a college advisor for primarily first generation low-income students.)

I’ve done everything “in order” by society’s standard. I went to a community college and then a public university. From what I can tell, I’ve made four “mistakes” along the way. I did not go to my community college for a full 2 years (1st mistake) because I followed my boyfriend (now husband!) to a university that was out-of-state for me (mistake #2), but in-state for him. My third mistake was that I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I ended up having to go back to college (by then it was in-state tuition) for another 3 semesters to get my second bachelor’s degree.

Around this time last year, I was admitted into a graduate program at my public university, but in order to enroll into the program, I had to land a full-time assistantship. Unfortunately, the other potential grad students I was competing with had much more experience than I, so I was not picked for an assistantship.

My 4th “mistake” was buying a house after realizing I was not going to get into the program. I say this was a mistake because not two weeks after closing on the house, I was asked to interview for another assistantship, but I had to turn it down due to my financial situation. I simply could not afford to quit my job for an assistantship that paid far less.

I say that I’ve done everything “in order” because I graduated high school, went to community college, got a 4-year degree (actually, two of them), started working at my first “real” job 2 weeks after graduation, got married, and bought a house. I have no debt besides school loans, a mortgage, and a (relatively) small car loan. I own a credit card, but I’ve never had to use it, and I hope never to have to. I’m anxious about having children because we don’t have a lot of “extra” money we can put away each month, but at the same time, we don’t buy ourselves “luxuries” by any means.

You would think that Suze Orman’s book would be something I’d be more interested in. However, I’m almost 30 and I’ve already researched a lot that is in her book. I definitely think I would benefit more from The Power of Less and could do more good with it where my students are concerned.

My New Year’s Resolution for this year is to simplify my life, to become more productive by doing so, and to teach my students lessons I’ve learned throughout the year (I write a bi-monthly newsletter). Most of them do not have their priorities in line (or rather, don’t know how to prioritize at all!) and do not have the mindset for the Power of Less. I am hoping to reach them and help them become more successful in school and in their personal lives. I’ve always wanted to feel like I have accomplished something - I thrive off of helping others, and since I don’t have children of my own, I have “adopted” ~700 students. :)

Plus, I need to de-clutter my life in general so that I can truly enjoy the things that are most important in life!!!

  13. [...] First of all, I want to thank everyone who took to the time to explain their inspiration. Some of you went above and beyond the call of duty and I wish I could give you all free books. I’m going to make this short and sweet. I was only going to give away one copy of each book but after reading some of the entries, I wanted to buy one more copy of The Power of Less. Here are the winners of The Power of Less, The Money Book, and The 4 Hour Work Week Giveaway. [...]
