Book Giveaway Winners!

Woman With BookFirst of all, I want to thank everyone who took to the time to explain their inspiration. Some of you went above and beyond the call of duty and I wish I could give you all free books. I’m going to make this short and sweet. I was only going to give away one copy of each book but after reading some of the entries, I wanted to buy one more copy of The Power of Less. Here are the winners of The Power of Less, The Money Book, and The 4 Hour Work Week Giveaway. Also, I want to thank Leo Babauta taking the time to congratulate the winners of his book. You can find his latest post here.

The Power of Less

I have a son who has a chronic sleep disorder. I’ve always told him that he has to make the most of the small window of opportunity he has each day to be productive. But I find it difficult in helping him figure out what’s most important. Certainly school is his main focus, but what comes after that? I think there’s also ways I can be more efficient in my day so that I could be there for him more. And so I’d like to read this book and also share it with my son. From the reviews I’ve read about it, I think there’s a lot we can learn.
- Rita

Hi Rita … I think kids and teens don’t need to worry about being
productive yet, although it’s great that you’re helping him make the
most of the time he has. What’s more important for most children and
teen-agers? A couple ideas:

* That he knows you love him, and that you’re compassionate towards
him at all times, especially when he’s suffering.
* That you help him develop a love for learning, which you can do by
helping him explore anything (*anything*) that excites him and
interests him. Find resources about whatever topics interest him (yes,
even video games), help him explore these topics, help him think of
fun projects to do with them.

These two things — compassion and an excitement about learning –
will last him a lifetime. Best of luck!
- Leo Babauta

The book that I need to move my life forward this year is The Power of Less. The last 7 years of my life have been incredibly complicated — 5 years of ongoing court battles in a divorce that financially devastated me, starting a new career from ground zero, health problems from all the stress, fixing up a run down home with little to no money or assistance. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. But last year was the beginning of the turnaround for me, and my life is beginning to feel like something more than a soap opera. I read about Leo’s book on Amazon as well as his website and realize that simplifying my life as he describes will take me to next level. Thanks for your consideration
p.s. I was also glad to discover your website - lots of good help here as well.
- Beverly

Hi Beverly … you and I have a lot in common! I’ve been through a
divorce (one of the hardest times of my life), I’ve started over in a
couple new careers, I’ve had financial problems, I’ve had stress and
health problems. But the way I saw the divorce and new career: a way
to start over, to reinvent myself. And so I used that time to simplify
my life, to figure out what was important, to cut back on spending to
help eliminate debt, to become the person I wanted to be.

You can do it, Beverly! It sounds like you’ve already done so much,
and I think The Power of Less will help you focus on what’s important,
and simplifying your life. Congrats on your success! And remember:
don’t wait for happiness — it’s available right here, right now, if
you focus on being happy in the moment, and appreciate the amazing
life you already have. :)

The 4 Hour Work Week

I’ve heard about this The 4 Hour Work Week (Hardcover) and I think it’s a good source of tips about doing what really matters in life/work. But I don’t have international Credit Card, I don’t have Paypal account to buy it on Ebay. And this book is not available in Portuguese, so my only hope is you. :) I’m trying to open my own business later this year. I’m a freelancer webdeveloper living in Sao Paulo. By the way, I’ll give 3 books here also. Good idea to inspire people to connect with people. Um abraco!
- Mateus

Mateus, I originally started in the web development business so it is good to see others taking that step and it brings me great memories! I hope you find the tips that will make you a success.

The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke

I’d like to read The Money Book, not because I’m young, fabulous and broke, but because I’m the exact opposite! Well, perhaps I’m young and fabulous, but definitely not broke ;). This ties into my resolution of trying to be more helpful… doing more good and placing more effort into helping other people. This book would help me because my peers tend to come to me for advice but I don’t really know what to tell them, especially in regards to having a difficult financial situation. I’m debt free and a modest spender, so it’s hard for me to understand rampant credit card debt from common place out of control spending. I’d like to read this book so I can offer my friends better advice and be a little more sympathetic!
- Ann

Ann, while I understand you are not broke, it is refreshing to hear that you are willing to spend your free time researching in order to help others! I hope you pay it forward and perhaps in time your friends can do the same.

Runner Ups

Growing up as a boy who didn’t have a father who truly loved him. Yes, my father would buy me things. But he would never care about who I was, what I did, what I was learning in school or anything else. So in an attempt to bond with him, I would go shopping and buy things by the thousand dollar mark regularly. Falsely believing that him ignoring me for ever but buying me things was true love father and son love, I continued my hedonistic lifestyle. After reading first Cal Newport’s Blog, and then Leo’s ZenHabits blog, I’ve greatly changed my view…
- Nazim

Nazim, unfortunately, I did not have enough books to give away. However, I can tell you are light years ahead of your age. Perhaps you can show your father this and he will understand and be proud that his son has learned some amazing lessons that will set him up for a very successful life. You have a bright future ahead of you. I encourage you to continue reading Leo’s articles, but also, invest in your own future and education, you will be able to do anything that you want.
- Jacques

My New Year’s Resolution for this year is to simplify my life, to become more productive by doing so, and to teach my students lessons I’ve learned throughout the year (I write a bi-monthly newsletter). Most of them do not have their priorities in line (or rather, don’t know how to prioritize at all!) and do not have the mindset for the Power of Less. I am hoping to reach them and help them become more successful in school and in their personal lives. I’ve always wanted to feel like I have accomplished something - I thrive off of helping others, and since I don’t have children of my own, I have “adopted” ~700 students. :) Plus, I need to de-clutter my life in general so that I can truly enjoy the things that are most important in life!!!
- M

M, although I could not give you a book, I want you to know that you’re still a winner. I will spare you the cliche since you are a teacher and probably have heard a lot of this, but I have a great respect for your profession and the fact that you are even considering trying to pass along these life lessons through your teaching says something. All your students are lucky to have you as a teacher. I know you’re smart so I’ll give you the concepts and you can run with them. Get rid of things you don’t need, check your email once or twice a day only, batch your chores together, make goals that are achievable and break bigs ones up into 2-3 month chunks, develop new habits but only one at a time, and if it isn’t important, don’t do it.
