Time is Important to Slackers too.

A couple days ago, I wrote a post about procrastination and what it really means. While I don’t take back anything that I’ve said, I want to make sure that everyone understands the importance and value of time. Afterall, if time wasn’t a factor, procrastination would be a little difficult to define, don’t you think?

Time is ticking and moving forward whether we like it or not. Although being slackers, we often want to spend our time in a way that feels comfortable to us, we need to make sure we are commanding our time. What I mean is, we have to be sure that we are in control of our time. The only way that we can do that, is to ensure that our time works for us. One of the ways we do that, is by recognizing that there are some more “productive” things we can do with our time. Although, “relaxing”, “vegging out”, and “catching up on myspace or facebook” are wonderful things that we want to do with our time, they’re the kind of thing you can do at any time and don’t really have a limit.

Instead, when I’m feeling indifferent or I’m avoiding/preparing for something I dislike, I spend my time having “productive” fun. By productive fun, I mean doing things that will advance your life, make it easier, or complete things you have to do anyway. For me, I exercise, or watch shows about money and investing. They’re fun, and they’ll provide a future benefit for me. I’m not going to go into more specifics, because these can be very specific to the person. The point is that you should spend time “investing” in yourself now, so that in the future, your time will pay you back in “dividends”, and you have more control over what you can do with your time.

I challenge you to create a list of at least ten things that will help you in some way in the future, but that you still enjoy doing. I can give you a few pointers on this. Try finding things that teach you something that you can use later. If you can’t think of anything, think of things that you have to do anyway that you find somewhat enjoyable or bearable. Finally, if you really are at a loss of finding fun yet productive activities, take things that you really enjoy and add a twist that will challenge you, like biking or running farther, watching shows that are educational like cooking or the news, or instead of partying and meeting new friends, try networking and meeting new business contacts. Make your time work for you. Lastly, don’t forget to save some time to tell your friends and family that you love them, because that’s a use of time that helps everyone.
